Birth Photography

The birth of a child is one of the most significant and beautiful events in life.  It is no surprise that more and more families are turning to professionals to help them document it. Birth is a journey, the process of becoming a mother and a father will change you forever and it’s worth documenting!

We capture those moments for you.

What to Expect

When I photograph a birth I try to remain as inconspicuous as possible. It is important to me to document your labor and birth as though I wasn’t even in the room. I use natural or available ambient light whenever possible. I shoot with top of the line professional digital equipment, which allows me to work in very low light situations, however, statistically speaking most births happen at night so sometimes it is necessary to use flash to capture key moments. Your safety and comfort will always be the top priority. If at any time the flash or shutter sound is making you uncomfortable please do not hesitate to ask me to stop or to step out of the room.

My client’s wishes about what is captured and documented are always my top priority. If a client prefers not to have some things documented or has special request I will do my best to accommodate.

After your baby is born I will stick around to capture your first moments with your child. I document the first feeding, the weigh in, and meeting any siblings or grandparents. If there are any other special requests please do not hesitate to mention them.

In the event of an unplanned c-section, I will most likely not be allowed to accompany you into the OR. The anesthesiologist sets the policy for the OR and usually only one or at most two support persons are allowed in with you. If I am not chosen to accompany you, I will pass off my backup DSLR camera set on auto to one of the persons accompanying you in the OR. I will then proof those images along with everything I capture so that there will not be any gaps in the story line.

Because birth photography is extremely personal and private I always allow my clients to review the images included in their slideshow and album before they are made public or printed. The images from your birth will only be shared with your expressed permission if you choose to share them at all.

My approach to birth photography is a photojournalistic with the end goal of providing you with a story told through photographs.

Newborn Photography

I have had the supreme privilege of photographing hundreds of brand new people.  Photographing your newborn baby is a responsibility I take very seriously.  When choosing a photographer to capture your new baby, experience and expertise count.  Your child's safety and comfort should be paramount.  That newborn stage is so fleeting, there is no do over in creating those newborn images.  Every baby is different and no two photo sessions are ever the same, but in my many years of experience I've never had a baby I couldn't get beautiful images of.  Only a very experienced professional should be handling and posing your new baby.

Newborn photo sessions may take place in my home studio or in the comfort of your home.  The flow of the photo session is dictated by your baby.  We will aim to photograph your baby between 5 and 12 days old, but if circumstances don't allow that, we'll make do.  We have even been known to show up in the NICU to take portraits for those who are not home yet.

If I can juggle my schedule to fit in a last minute newborn, I always will, so don't hesitate to reach out even if you're not prebooked or your baby is a bit older than ideal.
